If you love the environment and you try to be as sustainable as possible with your shopping decisions, you should consider those passions when you are choosing locks for your home. Wondering which type of locks are the best for environmentalists? Take a look at these points:
1. Look for locks made of recycled metal.
Locks are typically made of metal that can be recycled, and that can include everything from brass to steel. When shopping for locks, look at where the metal has been sourced from on the lock packaging. Ideally, you want a lock that features as high of a content of recycled metal as possible. Remember recycled metal is just as strong as metal that is new.
2. Insist on quality.
Whether you can find a recycled metal lock or not, try to opt for quality. One of the hardest things on the environment in the last few generations is the move toward planned obsolescence. This phrase means that objects are designed to break, and the profit-mongering idea behind that is that once something breaks, the consumer needs to replace it, netting the manufacturer even more money.
If you want to protect the environment, you need to break free from this cycle. Rather than buying a lock that might break or end up in the landfill in a few years, you want a high-quality lock that is going to last. To that end, look for a lock with incredible quality or a lock with a lifetime guarantee.
3. Consider locks with changeable codes.
Rather than opting for a lock that opens with a key, consider opting for a lock that has a code. From an environmental perspective, the benefit is that you don't have to replace the whole lock, potentially putting the lock into a landfill, if you lose a key. Instead, you can just change the code periodically as needed.
4. Look into smart locks.
As you are putting coded locks on your home, you may also want to think about smart locks. Smart locks connect to wi-fi, and that allows you to check their status regardless of where you are. For example, many smart locks connect to apps which you can check remotely. These apps can also lock your door for you.
As a result, if you think that you forgot to lock the doors of your home, you don't have to drive all the way home to relock your doors, wasting petrol. Instead, you can check on your locks using the app and then lock them remotely.
